The Origami Project

The Origami Project began with inspiration by local Saline dentist Dr. Carola Gerigk. Her interest in Japanese culture and concern for the recovery from the Tsunami of 2011 fueled this idea. Our goal at Heritage is to create 1,000 origami cranes and send them to Japan as a sign of hope.

It all started last spring with the 5th grade making origami cranes. With a total of 300 cranes made from last year, this years 5th grade has a tall order ahead of itself. We will begin creating origami cranes this October and ask every 5th grade student to contribute at least one. This endeavor will teach kids not only the art of paper folding through the construction of a crane, but it will teach kids about Japanese history and culture, and the challenges that Japan faces today.

Stay tuned for updates on The Origami Project. Future posts will include classroom photos, testimonials, and examples of origami cranes made by students. Follow our journey as we acquire more resources and inch closer to reaching our goal of 1,000 origami cranes to send to The Children’sPeace Monument in Japan.

5th Grade Perspective Drawing

One of the most exciting things for me as an Art teacher is to see students create outside of school. Especially when they exercise a technique that we study in class. That's exactly what happened when Brenna Crawford brought in her one-point perspective drawing to me this morning.

We've been studying perspective drawing for about 5 days now and I am very happy to see all the students taking interest in this technique. Brenna has a strong understanding of the tools and techniques used in the process.  Once she shared her drawing with me I just had to post it on the blog. I even asked her to explain her thought process to go along with the post. Please see what she has to say down below.

1. Describe how you constructed your drawing/room.

First I just followed directions from Mr. McCown at home, that's what got me started but then I started using my imagination, and I looked on line for inspiration, but nothing spoke to me. So I only used my imagination and that got me in the zone.

2. Explain how you came up with the items, details, and ideas to fill your room. 

Well, after failing to get inspiration from the internet, I looked around my house, I looked in my living room, that's where I got the couch idea. I also saw my fire place and then I remembered that at school my friend Isabella and I made a fire place, so I made a fire place and couch. Also, the picture on the ceiling, actually the picture came to me when I was sleeping. My friend has a picture above her and that just seemed cool, so I used it. So that's how it got the ideas.

Saline Main Street Banner Update

The Saline Main Street will be displaying student art on banners downtown Saline this spring. The "What I Love About Saline" theme generated close to 200 entries from students in Saline. Saline Art Students from Woodland Meadows, Heritage Elementary, and Saline Middle School displayed artwork at the Taste of Saline Friday, March 21. The display included approximately 10 pieces from each of the participating schools. The display looked great and it was a pleasure to support the Saline Main Street and their efforts in putting together such a great function for the community.

5:30-7:30 pm Saline High School Commons

Join us for an evening of food, entertainment and community as we celebrate an opportunity to help end hunger! Enjoy a bowl of soup, fresh bread, beverage and dessert prepared by the Saline High School Culinary Arts department. Take home a handmade ceramic bowl made by Saline Area Schools Art Students (Grades 3-12). Musical entertainment provided by Saline High School students. Net proceeds will be contributed to the Food Gatherers of Washtenaw County to help those in need.

Tickets are available NOW via PaySchools and will be sold at any school building. 

$14 per person OR $45 per family

This event has been a sell-out for the past two years in a row.

Empty Bowls Workshop Heritage & Woodland Meadows

This past Tuesday teachers, staff, and members of the community joined Kevin McCown and Laura Laatsch in the art room to express their creativity to help fight hunger. Celebrities such as Stephen Kerr, Fire Chief Hoeft, Mr. Benedek, Ms. Furlo, Ms. Reece, Mr. and Mrs. Marshall, Mrs. Allmand, Mrs. Werner, Mrs. Kargel, and many others constructed bowls during the workshop to be auctioned off at the 4th Annual Empty Bowls charity event at the Saline High School on Thursday, February 6th. All proceeds go to Food Gatherer's of Washtenaw County. Last year this event generated  a $5,723.58 donation to help fill the bowls of families in our community.

Heritage Learns About ArtPrize

Heritage students are not only busy creating, they are taking time to learn a little bit about Art Prize. Each day kids are learning about the process of the event and what ArtPrize means to artists, art, and the community of Grand Rapids.

ArtPrize is a lot of fun to participate in. Artists from all over the world submit entries into the competition. Many people visit the city to celebrate the art. Visitors can register to vote and help determine the $200,000 top prize. The only requirement is that you must be within the ArtPrize boundaries to vote via Mobile App, Text, or at a Voting Site.
