Wow!

This spider looks creepy. Well done Zenzi (4th grade - Mrs. Kelley). The legs on this monster are fuzzy. Great use of complementary contrast on your tempera painting. Look for this painting and many other amazing works of art in the Spring Arts Festival.

Spring Arts Festival Prep

Soon this board will be filled with children's artwork. K-12 Art teachers are preparing for the Annual Spring Arts Festival that will take place May 3-5 at the Saline High School. This is an extremely busy time of the year that will showcase the extraordinary accomplishments of Saline's student artists.

Congratulations to senior Adam Bruely, and to senior Alexis  DeLand their artwork won them state honors!

"Higher Ground" by Adam Bruely 

On March 2, 2013 artwork from across the state was adjudicated in Lansing, at Michigan State

University. Adam and Alexis each  had a drawing entered into this process. After the day long judging each of them had a work that was selected as Top 100 in the state! Their drawings will be on display in May, at the Michigan Youth Arts Festival at Western Michigan University in

Kalamazoo.

Masks Around the World Clay Unit

In the 8th Grade Art classes we made clay masks of animals from different places around the world. We learned about the places that the animals came from and got to choose from the animals that live there. This was a fun project because some of us that have little experience with clay, got to be creative and learn at the same time! Along with the masks, we created stories or myths about the animals we made. Here is an example:

The Legend of Mogli

The panda's face is that of sheer terror and loneliness. Legend has it that he became completely alone at a very young age when his family abandoned him. His small pupils symbolize the loneliness that he has felt for most of his life, and his big ears show the shock and terror that he felt when he realized that the ones he loved were gone. His name is Mogli which means "brilliant" in Chinese, because while living on his own, he taught himself new things and learned from other creatures on his journeys. He would help animals that needed it, throughout his whole life. No one knows when Mogli actually died, but his spirit is said to still be traveling Asia, helping creatures, and looking for his lost family.

Celebrity Portraits

The 7th and 8th grade Art classes at Saline Middle School created outstanding drawings of "Celebrity Portraits". Students selected black and white photographs of their favorite celebrity and recreated the images using the "grid" system- a system that was used during the Renaissance period, to get accurate proportions.  The drawings were enlarged 3 or 4 times larger than the original image.  Students practiced their shading skills  and the goal was to show subtle changes of value in their final drawing.  Good job middle schoolers!
